The Ultimate Guide to STCW Certifications
Everything you need to know about the basic safety training (STCW) required by all maritime crew members before setting sail.
If you're planning to work on a commercial ship, yacht, or luxury cruise liner, there is one mandatory requirement you cannot bypass: the STCW Certification (Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping). This guide explains what it is and how to get it.
What is STCW?
Established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 1978, the STCW Convention ensures a high global standard of training and safety for all seafaring crew members. Regardless of your rank or department—whether you are a Captain, a Chef, or a Retail Clerk—you must complete this training.
The 4 Pillars of STCW Basic Safety Training
The standard Basic Safety Training course lasts approximately 5 days and covers four essential modules:
1. Personal Survival Techniques (PST)
This module teaches you how to survive at sea in the event of ship abandonment. You will learn:
- Launching life rafts and survival craft.
- Proper use of lifejackets and immersion suits.
- Survival in cold water and swimming while wearing life-saving equipment.
2. Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (FPFF)
Safety on board is everyone's responsibility. You will receive practical training in:
- Identifying fire hazards on ships.
- Using different types of fire extinguishers.
- Operating hoses, breathing apparatuses, and search-and-rescue drills in smoke-filled environments.
3. Elementary First Aid (EFA)
Basic medical response skills to handle injuries on board until medical officers take over:
- Performing CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation).
- Treating wounds, bleeding, shocks, and burns.
- Transporting casualties properly.
4. Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (PSSR)
This module is designed to prepare you for the unique social and structural environment of living and working on a ship:
- Understanding shipboard command structures.
- Marine pollution prevention protocols.
- Fatigue management and effective communication.
Where Can You Get Certified?
You must attend an approved maritime training academy. Make sure the school's certification is recognized by your target cruise lines and the flag state of the ship (usually US Coast Guard, MCA, or Malta flags).
Once you obtain your STCW certificate, it is valid for 5 years, after which you will need a refresher course. Keep your certificate safe and scanned—it is the first document recruiters will request!
